Get to know me

Updated: Jun 16, 2022

You probably stumbled across this page if you're in a military relationship looking for advice, but you've made it to the right place if you're specifically an Army girlfriend. Army girlfriends typically have a hard time fitting in with the wives, here we can stick together and learn from each other.

Hi, I'm Summer, I will be 22 next week and I have been an Army girlfriend for the last 3 years.

My boyfriend and I have been dating for over 6 years now, but 3 of those have been long distance thanks to the Army. I went away for college, and he stayed closer to home. He would come visit and it was great. Then, it was the summer of 2019 and out of the blue, he told me he wanted to join the Army. Soon after that we found out he was leaving for bootcamp in a month. I was in utter shock and didn’t know how to feel, but what was I going to do besides deal with the distance and let him go? I always said I would never date someone in the military. I thought “I could never do that,” or “how do people do that, props to them.” Bootcamp was challenging, not only for him, but for me and his family. Once we got that first letter, and that first call, we knew we could get through it. Then it was finally time for bootcamp graduation. His family and I drove to the base to watch him graduate and spend the weekend with him. Let me tell you, tapping him out and giving him the biggest hug was the BEST feeling ever, and made the wait worth it.

Now, we’ve gone through 3 years of military life, and only have roughly 5 months left of him being in active duty. I’m finishing up college, beginning my career, and he is going to be home so soon, for good.

The purpose of this blog is to help the other Army girlfriends out there and let them know that what they're feeling is valid. It is truly something that cannot be understood without being in it first-hand, and it’s always good to know someone is doing it too. Whether you’re in my situation and your long-term boyfriend decides to enlist, or you start a relationship with someone who is already in, hopefully this blog can help you through the process.
